Daydreams

Hera bounced along the bank of the wooded creek, under the dappling shadows and sun beams breaking through the thick foliage overhead. She was off by herself again, free to explore the deep greens and rushing sounds of the water beside her feet. A glint of flashing gold caught her eye, stopping her in her tracks. She scrunched down beside the water to steady her focus on the shiny thing rippling slowly between the long grass and rocks of the stream. A smile curled across her lips as she locked eyes with the fish. It's long tail streamed slowly in the glassy current like an elegant white scarf caught in the first whistlings of a storm. The two creatures locked eyes, innocently studying each other from across the thin plane separating their two worlds. Hera wondered what the tiny creature must be thinking of her, a strange giant in soft pink staring down at it from an unreachable sky. It wouldn't do to cause a disturbance by reaching in to touch it. Something seemed rude about that, although she had never been able to figure out why. She let herself flop down and sit at the edge of the water as the fish lost interest in her and started nibbling at the thick emerald moss on the bottom.

Hera pulled out the scrap of paper that had caused the whole fuss earlier that day. She unfolded it flat on the ground and ran her hand over it to erase the creases the best she could. She still couldn't understand what the problem was. It was a pretty picture after all. She'd used nice soft mint greens and sky blues, and had even colored within the lines she'd sketched out to start with. She thought it would look just lovely beside the myriad ones she had done of her Mommy and Daddy and herself. They would be so proud of it.

Only when she showed it to her Mommy, she looked at it like something was wrong. Like it was something from one of her dreams that she'd used to have when she was really little. Her Mommy told her those were just dreams and didn't really belong in the daytime. It didn't make much sense to her but she didn't like the way those drawings made her Mommy feel, so she'd stopped drawing them. The dreams stopped soon enough, too. She learned to love to draw daytime things, like her family and her house and her cat. She drew everything she saw. Daytime things were prettier than the dreamtime things anyway.

Her Daddy came in to the house and asked her what she had. Her Mommy looked at him with the same scared look she had given her as she proudly held up the picture for him. “When did you dream this baby?” he asked her. She didn't understand that at all.

“I don't draw dreamtime things now, you told me.” she replied.

He always believed her, always trusted her. Only this time, she could tell he didn't. “Yeah, I know baby.”

“Helo...” her Mommy nervously glared at him.

Her Daddy just smiled and gave the picture back to her. She didn't understand why her Mommy seemed afraid of it or why her Daddy acted the way he did. She was playing outside when she heard them talking louder at each other. She didn't mean to cause any problems.

She just wanted to show them a picture she'd drawn of the lady that was now sitting beside her at the edge of the water.

“That is so pretty.” she told her softly, leaning in close with her arms wrapped tight around her knees.

“I don't think they liked it.” Hera replied quietly.

“Why's that?” the young woman in the silky green and blue dress asked her. “You totally got my good side.”

“I think Mommy was afraid of you. I don't think Daddy was though...I just don't think he liked me drawing you.”

“Maybe they're worried that you're afraid of me.”

“I'm not afraid of you.” Hera snickered “You're nice.”

“Well I know that...” the lady giggled. She brushed back her thick hair from her eyes and sat quietly, watching the small fish nibble away beneath the water.

“How come some dreams are scary and some aren't?” Hera asked quizzically.

“Well...there's good dreams, and there's bad dreams because...” she stopped in mid sentence and Hera looked up at her to see a confused smirk wriggling her face . “Because there just are.”

“That's it?”

“As much as I know.”

“But aren't you a muse or something?” Hera asked, scrunching her nose.

“Something like that.” she grinned without another word.

“I think my parent's think all of mine are bad. And they think everything I see that they don't could be scary, so...”

“So they just don't want you to have to be afraid.” the nice lady finished for her. “Makes sense to me.”

“Not me.” Hera replied sadly.

“Well...” the pretty lady in the pretty dress sighed “...some things make sense eventually.”

Hera turned from the lady and the picture and looked down again at the fish. It seemed happy in it's tiny world, all to itself and it's own cares. Hera wondered if it could understand enough about what she was to even care that she was watching over it. She felt a little sad over the fish. The pretty lady in the dress saw her frown.

“Here...” the lady told Hera, leaning in to give her a small piece of what looked like a cookie. “Drop it in the water.”

Hera took the crumbling yellow sweet and watched it rain on the water and slowly sink. The fish stirred from it's moss to perk it's head up toward the surprise from above. It jetted for the surface, munching into the soggy bits of cookie with obvious glee.

“See? It likes you.” the lady smiled at her kindly. "You're nothing to be afraid of either.”

Hera smiled happily at the fish in the dappled sunlight. She had another new friend to share the day with.

The End.

Great, and eeire little story! It is a good concept well written. I especially liked the way it took time (but not too much) to unfold and the parallel with the fish in the pool.

Glad ya' liked it... :)

In my own canon explanation for what makes Hera different is she can "see" across universes herself instead of having to have a near death experience or be on drugs or hooked up to a Baseship, or any other odd experience. For her, it's totally normal to know stuff that everybody else doesn't or see things nobody else can, including people that have crossed over to other universes. When we saw her on the show as an infant, she had no control over it and was always seeing alternate realities like her parents getting killed or seeing emotionally traumatic moments from other peoples' lives, thus why she had so many nightmares. This has got to be really hard on her parents, so in this, they took a heartfelt course where they encourage her to just not want to remember all the scary stuff she's seen. AND, growing up as kid that can see "dead people" and alternate realities really would be hard too, so I think there's be a part of Hera that worries she's a freak or something bad.

The thing with the fish is mirroring her own ability to see over into other worlds and her uncertainty about how or if she should ever interact with the people she sees on the other side. The lady she's made friends with in this tries to help her see it's a gift she can proud of and not something she should feel bad about.

:hugs:

Which leads to the last question...who the frak was she talking to???

I don't know. :?: I actually wanted to leave that to the characters to know and the reader to just wonder about. It's somebody that "died" on the show since her parents instantly recognize them, but beyond that I wanted it to be vague, so if you want it can be Kara or Boomer or Natalie or Racetrack or anybody that's on the other side that Hera can see and nobody else can. It is creepy to everybody else, but the idea behind this is for Hera, it's her own world to explore her own way, so for her, I thought it was a sweet little moment.
